she stood in front of the mirror, dabbing makeup on her face,
it covers all the bruises and she puts her hair in place.
she stares at her reflection with tears filling her eyes,
but she pulls herself together, she can't let them see her cry.
she walks into the kitchen and tries to clean up the mess,
broken dishes scattered and crushed, like pieces of happiness.
she picks up the knives all over the floor and cleans up all the glass,
she knows inside as she cleans up that this will not be the last.
quietly, she makes some dinner, even though she cringes in pain,
she can't show how much she's hurt, it'll set him off again.
she can never stop to think about it while he's still around,
there's no time to think of who to blame, so she never makes a sound.
the only time she can be herself is in the middle of the night,
she can take a walk and stop and think in the shadow of the moonlight.
she wonders what has happened to the man she admired and loved,
so full of love and full of happiness, he was a father she dreamed of.
but time told a different story after a few months of childhood bliss,
she sighs as she remembers that it wasn't supposed to be like this.
she had so many dreams of the future, so much that she had planned,
but now he just shatters them with his tightly fisted hand.
she knows that it won't be the same, and everytime she looks at him,
the memories of smiles they had are starting to grow dim.
the bruises on her body were inflicted by his hand,
he used them as his weapons so that she would "understand".
so she wipes away the blood and pulls herself together,
knowing that it'll never change, it's gonna be like this forever.
